Croissants in Paris, Safaris in Kenya: Our Wild Journey Begins

After months of planning, packing, and daydreaming about lions and sunsets over the savannah, the big day finally came—we were off to Kenya! But first, a quick pit stop in Paris because, you know, even a journey to Africa needs a touch of French flair. We only had time for a quick croissant (but what a croissant it was—flaky, buttery perfection!) before sprinting back to the gate for our flight to Nairobi. Let’s be honest, it wasn’t really a trip to Paris, but my taste buds were happy, and I was ready for the next adventure.

Touchdown in Nairobi: Hakuna Matata, Sort Of…

Landing in Nairobi at sunset felt like stepping into a postcard. The colors of the sky were stunning, and I was already imagining giraffes casually wandering by. But first, we had to tackle the airport, which greeted us with a classic "Welcome to Africa" moment: a power outage. No lights, no technology, just a lot of confused (but surprisingly calm) travelers. It was as if the universe was saying, “Slow down, you’re in Africa now, hakuna matata!” After a few flickers, the power came back, and we eventually got our bags. It took a bit of patience (and some crossed fingers), but hey, we were officially in Kenya!

Our guide greeted us with a warm smile, and after navigating through a few more technical hiccups—because of course, the airport’s systems weren’t exactly cooperating—we were off to our hotel for some much-needed sleep. The drive through Nairobi was a whirlwind of sights and sounds, but all I could think about was a soft bed waiting for me on the other side.

Nairobi Mornings: The Breakfast of Champions

The next morning, I woke up to the sound of birds singing (and okay, maybe some honking horns in the distance), ready to take on the day. Our group gathered for breakfast, and let me tell you—this spread had everything. Think of a breakfast buffet that’s part English, part American, and 100% African. There were eggs, bacon, and pancakes for the traditionalists, but I went all in on the local stuff: chapati (basically the love child of a crepe, flatbread, and heaven), vegetable curry, and fresh fruit that tasted like it had been plucked straight from the tree.

Fueled by deliciousness, we sat down with our guide for a morning briefing. Today, we were headed to the Maasai Mara! Cue the excitement, the squeals, and the frantic packing as we piled back into our safari vehicle for the road trip of a lifetime.

The Great Rift Valley: Wildlife, Views, and POW Highways

Leaving Nairobi behind, we ventured out into the wild—literally. We passed through the Great Rift Valley, one of those places that makes you feel very small in the best possible way. Our driver pulled over at a scenic viewpoint, and we all jumped out to snap photos. Imagine sweeping landscapes that seem to go on forever, dotted with wildlife just chilling in the distance. We spotted a few monkeys grazing (casual), and the reality that we were actually in Kenya started to sink in.

The road we were on had some history too—it was a single-lane highway built by Italian POWs during World War II. A little history mixed in with our wildlife safari? Why not! As we drove along, we spotted more animals—donkeys nibbling on roadside grass and baboons who seemed to have no problem loitering by the road, checking us out as much as we were checking them out. And let’s not forget our first glimpse of the Maasai people, wrapped in bright red shukas, herding cattle and going about their day. We waved, they didn't waved—but it was a whole moment.

Road Trip Jams: “Hakuna Matata,” “Africa,” and the Ultimate Safari Playlist

No road trip is complete without a killer playlist, and ours was legendary. Our guide had a serious knack for setting the mood, and before we knew it, we were belting out the safari classics. First up was “Hakuna Matata,” because how could you not? Then came the iconic “Africa” by Toto, and we even threw in “Jambo Bwana,” a popular Kenyan tune that had us all grinning from ear to ear. With windows down, music blasting, and the wild Kenyan landscape zooming past, it was pure road trip bliss.

After a few hours of this musical magic (and several animal sightings later), we finally rolled up to our home for the next few days: a glamping site in the heart of the Maasai Mara.

Glamping in Style: Luxury Tents and Poolside Chillin'

Now, let’s talk about this glamping situation. If you’re picturing a basic tent and campfire, think again. This was luxury camping—think tents with real beds, electricity, running water, and even mosquito nets that made me feel like I was starring in my own safari movie. Each tent had its own private balcony where we could sip coffee and watch the sunrise over the Mara. Yeah, we were roughing it…in style.

First things first, though. After all those hours on the road, we couldn’t resist a dip in the pool. That equator sun was no joke, and the cool water felt like heaven. We splashed around, basking in the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. Tomorrow was going to be a full day on safari, but for now, it was all about enjoying this little slice of paradise.

First Game Drive: Lions, Rocks, and Rainbows

With the heat of the day fading, it was time for our first game drive. We piled into the safari jeep, buzzing with excitement, but nature had a little surprise in store for us—rain! A storm started to roll in, dark clouds swirling above us. The animals, sensing the shift, began to move. We spotted herds of elephants and zebras making their way to shelter, and it felt like we were getting a behind-the-scenes look at how the animal kingdom prepares for a storm.

Our guide pulled to the side of the road and said to look closely, he thought he saw something in the bush. Then, in the distance, I saw it—our first lion! I practically yelled, “LION!” and pointed dramatically. The guide slowed down, everyone squinting into the distance, cameras at the ready. And then… well, it turned out to be a rock. Yep, just a rock, sitting there like it had nothing better to do. The whole jeep erupted in laughter, and I knew immediately that I wasn’t going to live this down anytime soon. For the rest of the trip, every boulder or suspiciously shaped shrub became my “lion.”

Thankfully, nature decided to redeem me because just as the rain started to lighten up, something magical happened. A rainbow stretched across the sky—one of those perfect, vibrant rainbows that looks like it was painted just for us. The entire savannah lit up in the golden glow of the setting sun, and for a moment, we all just sat there in awe. It was one of those “pinch me” moments where the beauty of the world just takes your breath away.

We may not have seen lions or wildebeest on that first drive, but that rainbow made the entire day unforgettable. As we made our way back to camp, the storm clouds dissipating, I couldn’t help but feel like this was the perfect start to our Kenyan adventure.

What’s Next: Hot Air Balloons and More Mara Magic

That night, after a hearty dinner and lots of chatter about the day's adventures (and yes, my rock-lion), I crawled into my cozy glamping bed, exhausted but buzzing with excitement. Tomorrow, we’d be up before dawn because we were going on a hot air balloon ride over the Maasai Mara at sunrise! I could hardly contain my excitement as I drifted off to sleep, knowing that tomorrow was going to be nothing short of epic.

Kenya had already woven its magic, and we’d only just begun. Stay tuned for more—this adventure is only getting started!
