Goodbye, Sea of Galilee – Hello, Dead Sea!
With a bittersweet farewell we switched out the tranquil waters of the Sea of Galilee for the salty brine of the Dead Sea. The day promised a mix of ancient history, biblical discoveries, and ultimate relaxation. Buckle up for a recount of our fun-filled day, starting with Bet She'an, Qumran, and Masada, and ending with a luxurious dip in the Dead Sea’s mineral-rich waters.
Bet She'an: Ancient Ruins and Modern Fun
Our first stop was Bet She'an, an archaeological wonder that blends history with jaw-dropping ruins. This ancient city has seen civilizations rise and fall, from the Egyptians to the Romans. As we walked through the remains of the city, it was like stepping into a time capsule.
We marveled at the well-preserved Roman theater, imagining gladiator battles and lively performances. The city's main street, lined with columns, led us to the impressive bathhouse complex. It was easy to picture the hustle and bustle of ancient Bet She'an, with its bustling markets and public spaces. Some of our group even tried out the ancient public toilets🤣!

Bet She'an is mentioned in the Bible as the place where the Philistines hung the bodies of King Saul and his sons after their defeat at Mount Gilboa (1 Samuel 31:10-12). Walking these ancient streets, we felt a profound connection to the past, mingling history with a touch of modern fun as we snapped countless photos and imagined life in this once-thriving city.

Qumran: The Secrets of the Dead Sea Scrolls
Our next destination took us to the rugged cliffs of Qumran, the site where the famous Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. As we gazed at the caves dotting the rocky landscape, we couldn’t help but feel the excitement of this incredible archaeological find.
The Dead Sea Scrolls, discovered by a Bedouin shepherd in 1947, include some of the oldest known manuscripts of the Bible. These ancient texts have provided invaluable insights into the religious and cultural practices of the Second Temple period.
As we explored the ruins of the Qumran settlement, our guide shared fascinating stories about the Essenes, the Jewish sect believed to have lived here. These ascetic monks devoted their lives to prayer, study, and writing, leaving behind a legacy that has enriched our understanding of history and faith. Of course, we couldn’t resist a little fun—taking turns peeking into the caves and speculating on what it must have been like to stumble upon such a monumental discovery.

Masada: A Fortress in the Sky
Next, we arrived at the majestic fortress of Masada. Perched atop a towering plateau overlooking the Judean Desert, Masada is a symbol of ancient resistance and resilience. The journey to the top offered breathtaking views and a sense of anticipation. Some of our more adventurous group members decided to tackle the Snake Path—a winding, steep trail that snakes up the mountain.

The trail climbs 1150 feet over 1.25 miles, so it's not for the feint of heart (and definitely not for me!!). Their determination and energy were inspiring, though I have to admit, the rest of us were quite content with the scenic cable car ride!

Once at the summit, we explored the remains of King Herod’s palace, with its luxurious baths and storerooms. The history of Masada is truly fascinating. Built by King Herod the Great as a refuge against his enemies, the fortress includes palaces, storerooms, and impressive water cisterns. During the Jewish-Roman War, Masada became the last stronghold of the Jewish rebels. The Roman siege, their construction of a massive ramp, and the tragic ending of the defenders’ mass suicide rather than capture, have become symbols of Jewish heroism and the fight for freedom.

Exploring the vast complex, we found ourselves transported back in time, imagining the lives of those who once inhabited this formidable fortress. We marveled at the intricate mosaics, ancient bathhouses, and the breathtaking views of the Judean Desert and the Dead Sea below. It was easy to see why Masada holds such a special place in Israeli history and culture.

Journey to the Dead Sea: Floating in Bliss
After a day steeped in history and exploration, we made our way to the Dead Sea for a much-anticipated swim. As we floated effortlessly on the salty waters, it felt like pure magic.
The buoyancy of the water made floating an absolute breeze, and we couldn’t help but revel in the sheer joy of it. It was a perfect blend of relaxation and playfulness, a unique experience that none of us would soon forget.

Thermal Pools, Steam Rooms, and Saunas: A Perfect End to the Day
As the sun began to set, we headed to our hotel, where a world of relaxation awaited us. The thermal pools, steam rooms, and saunas were the ultimate reward after a day of adventure. We soaked in the warm waters, letting the mineral-rich springs soothe our tired muscles. The steam rooms and saunas provided a blissful escape, leaving us feeling rejuvenated and pampered.
We shared stories of the day’s adventures, laughed about our floating escapades in the Dead Sea, and simply enjoyed the moment. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the incredible journey we had experienced together.
